ABOUT BETTY
I provide biofeedback services, Awareness Through Movement (ATM) sessions one-on-one or in groups using the Feldenkrais Method ®, and stress management counseling.
I grew up in a military family so lived in various international (Germany, Okinawa) and national (Massachusetts, Florida) outposts. However, thanks to maternal grandparents, I am most at home in North Carolina, especially the Smokey Mountains around Waynesville where I graduated high school. I attended University of NC-Greensboro (BA, summa cum laude) and Duke Divinity School (M. Div., magna cum laude).
In 1976 I began working in the Clinical Biofeedback Laboratory of Duke University Medical Center and discovered a profession as Biofeedback Practitioner that continues to interest and sustain me after almost 30 years. In the early 1980s, a national professional organization, The Biofeedback Society of America, developed certification procedures for what was then a new educational and career field. While at DUMC, I completed all requirements set forth by the Biofeedback Certification Institute of America; I maintain that certification with over 400 hours of continuing education and 20 additional years of experience. I left Duke in 1987; at that time I began to create a private practice in association with a variety of medical or psychological practices in Durham, Raleigh and Chapel Hill. I currently partner with Millennium Neurology in Durham.
In 1998, through a respected colleague and friend, I became acquainted with The Feldenkrais Method® of teaching and learning. I began a 4 year certification/training program in the Feldenkrais Method in 2003; having completed a full two years, I received certification as an Awareness Through Movement® instructor this past December.
My community service history includes participation as a board officer or member with The Orange-Durham Coalition for Battered Women, the Resource Center for Women and Ministry in the South and Vestry and committee service at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Hillsborough, NC. I have served 10 years on the board of the North Carolina Biofeedback Society and 8 years as its Treasurer.
